Going down to Nashville to see a friend of mine. That friend happens to be a doughnut at 5 daughters bakery. Also made some stops at Hattie B's, Peg Leg Porker, and Edlys. Jump on in and see how it compares to the other food vacations, but first some pictures of the city and that doughnut.

Leaving the stadium. Don't worry there will be more skyline! |
Alright I know my readers and what they want, and while that is normally pictures of food it also stories about missing out on free stuff. The night before the trip to Nashville I was at the Sixers game as they took on the Spurs. In the second half of all Sixers' games there is the frosty freeze out where if the visiting team misses 2 free throws in a row the whole crowd wins free frostys from Wendys the next day. If it happens twice, add a small fries and if happens 3 times it is a medium frosty and a medium fries. Now it was down to the last minute of the game, and with the Sixers victory in hand it did not look like the freeze out would be happening tonight. 🙁 Then Lonnie Walker got fouled and was sent to the line and he missed two in free throws and the crowd went wild for frosties had been won. Now I have a 7:58 flight the next day and Wendys does not do breakfast so there is basically no window to stop for a frosty; unless there is one in the Philadelphia airport. At 6:30 am instead of playing pokemon Go, which is the best activity to do in the airport an hour or more before your flight, I am searching for a wendys. Turns out no Wendys so no frosty, what a missed opportunity.
Well get on the flight without the frosty so I am hungry when I land at 9:18 Nashville time, but the famos hot chicken place does not open till 11:00. (Note to readers Nashville and Philadelphia are not in the same timezone) That's okay because my friend and host Ryan had some popcorn sitting in a bowl when I got there as we waited for the restaurant to open. We ordered take out because well the line for this place is less than Franklin BBQ but still quite long and I was hungry and waiting in the rain was not going to happen.
From Hattie Bs I ordered the Mild chicken sandwich. I didn't go with the hotter versions because I didn't want to potentially cry from the heat in front of Ryan and his new super cool friends.
The chicken was excellent, The outside was extremely crispy, while the inside retain the proper moisture. Sometimes you can get a chicken sandwich and the insides of the chicken is on the drier side of things. Not the case here. The bun was buttery and delicious. On the sandwich has a sauce that added a coolness that played well with the spice but did not over power the sandwich. On the spice level I might have been able to go up a level but I am not so sure. It had plenty of kick as it was. Excellent sandwich. The fries had some light seasoning on them as well. I liked the flavor and the overall crispness of the fires was good as well. No soggy fries here.
Before moving on to the next resutant I wanted to point maybe the best building in Nashville: The AT&T building better known as the batman building.
If you don't know why this is the Batman building please go watch Christopher Nolan's Batman Trilogy before continuing on to the section about the Peg Leg Porker.
At the Peg Leg Porker there are really only two options pulled pork or ribs. Both Ryan and I got the pulled pork. Mine as a platter his as a sandwich. The pork had a great pork flavor. The rub and smoke used on it really enhanced the flavor and did not overpower it. Mine was not dry at all and could have eaten without the sauce, which for the most part I did. Now there is only one sauce on the table which is a vinegar based sauce. I felt like I have had better sauce because this one did not seem to add much to the flavor profile except for the taste of vinegar. Now apparently you could have gotten at least a white sauce from the counter but it was not clear there was another option. A good white sauce would have gone well with the pork. Mac and cheese was normal mac and cheese, nothing that separated it from the field. The potato salad was also solid, basically just red bliss potatoes and mayo, it had a good potato flavor and the potatoes did not fall apart. It was not overly mayoed.

Ryan's sandwich, not really sure what he is doing with the fork here. |
Sunday was mainly about going to watch football before the titans game and going to the Titans game and grabbing dinner after. Here are some pictures I grabbed on the walk to the stadium since no one wants to read about the Nashville pizza.
After the game we went to Edley's Bar-B-Que where the bar is open as long as the drinks are flowing
I decided to switch things up this time an went with the Brisket. The first bite was not good, I was not expecting how overpowering the sauce was going to be, it is served on the meat. The second bite without any sauce was great. The beef was well cook, maybe a bit tougher than perfect as the fork didn't just cut through and a knife was needed but other than that it was spot on. It had a solid bark with some pepper but not a significant amount. Other than the sauce trying to be the star of the show this was meal. The sides that I went with where the baked beans and the banana pudding. The banana pudding was delicious. I really enjoyed the banana taste as well as the crunch of the hidden cookies. The beans were good. They had a good amount of kick bit it was not that hot. The cornbread had jalapenos instead of it which makes it different than other corn beard but at the end of the day it was perfectly average cornbread.
Now the star of the show was hands down the doughnut at 5 daughters bakery.
I got two 100 layer Doughnuts. The King Kong and the Maple glaze.
The King Kong was the perfect combination of saltiness with the bacon, and sweetness with the mapple icing and cream filling. Each bite was like a piece of heaven in my mouth. It was delicious. Now these are 100 layer doughnuts which are essentially doughnuts baked like croissants but then covered with a layer of sugar.
The sugar coating is so thick even as it falls off there is a lot left on the doughnut. Now before getting to the frosty problem part two here are some more pictures that make you think that Nashville is actually in Ancient Greece.
So the last story to tell is that at the Titans game there is another frosty give away. If the visiting team commits two false start penalties then the crowd gets free frosties. Instead of being super cool about and only needed to show up and Wendys and saying give me my free small frosty, the Titans require you to download the Titan up app and present that to the Wendys in the Nashville area. Well as much as I wanted to claim my frosty freeze out frosty from Friday night, there was no way I was going to download the Titans app on my phone. So there was no Frosty for me on this trip.
Hope you enjoyed the trip recap and the pictures that show why I should not be going into professional photography. Till next time this is south Jersey premiere BBQ blogger signing off.
